Man met verwarmde kleding in winterse omstandigheden voor thermisch comfort

What does research say about heated clothing and thermal comfort?

When it is cold, we normally put on extra layers. Heated clothing adds something different: active warmth close to the body.

But what does research actually tell us about this form of personal heating?

Scientists have studied so-called personal heating systems for years. Instead of heating an entire environment, these systems provide local warmth to an individual. Electrically heated clothing is one example.

Why warmth around the torso is interesting

The torso is an important area for how we experience temperature. That is why many heated garments focus their heating zones on areas such as the chest and back.

In one experimental study, twelve participants were first exposed to a room at 20 °C and then to an environment of about -2.2 °C for thirty minutes. During the cold exposure, they wore an electrically heated vest under different heating settings.

In this experiment, torso heating reduced the negative effect of sudden cold exposure on thermal sensation. The researchers also concluded that a smart, intermittent heating mode could achieve thermal comfort while using less energy than the other heating mode studied.

This does not mean that every heated garment will automatically produce the same result. The study was conducted under controlled conditions with a specific system and a small group of participants. It does, however, show why personal torso heating is scientifically interesting.

Heated clothing at low indoor temperatures

Personal heating has also been studied in buildings.

Another study examined electrically heated clothing at indoor temperatures of 15 and 18 °C. The researchers reported that the heated clothing improved participants' thermal sensation and thermal comfort.

The underlying principle is simple: instead of first heating a large volume of air and an entire room, warmth is delivered closer to the user.

What does this mean in practice?

Heated clothing should not be seen as a magical replacement for normal winter clothing. It works best as part of a complete layering system.

  1. A dry base layer.
  2. An insulating layer.
  3. Heated clothing for additional, adjustable warmth.
  4. Protection from wind or rain when conditions require it.

The amount of warmth someone needs also varies considerably. A person sitting still has different needs from someone doing physically demanding work. When movement causes the body to produce more heat, less additional heating may be needed.

More heat is not automatically better

A higher heat setting is not always the best choice. Higher settings generally use more power from the power bank and can become unnecessarily warm when you are active. It is therefore usually better to start on a low setting and increase the heat when needed.

KingsPower heated clothing offers multiple heat settings, allowing you to adjust the amount of additional warmth to the situation.

What science does not say

It is important to distinguish thermal comfort from medical effects.

Research into heated clothing and personal heating suggests that local heating can improve thermal sensation under certain conditions. This does not automatically mean that heated clothing treats medical conditions, improves circulation or prevents health problems.

KingsPower heated clothing is therefore intended as clothing that provides additional warmth, not as a medical device.

Conclusion

Scientific research into personal heating supports the basic principle behind heated clothing: warmth close to the body can contribute to thermal comfort in a cold environment.

Its practical value lies mainly in the combination of insulation, adjustable heat and the ability to take that warmth with you into different situations. From a cold morning commute by bicycle to outdoor work or a chilly workspace, you add warmth where you actually wear it.
