Personal heating or heating the whole room: what does research say?
Share
When you feel cold, the traditional solution is simple: turn up the thermostat. But that does not only heat you; it heats an entire room.
This raises an interesting question: what happens when heat is brought closer to the person instead?
What is personal heating?
Scientific literature often refers to this as personal heating or personal thermal management.
The idea is that thermal comfort does not have to be controlled only by the temperature of an entire building. A person can be heated locally with, for example, a heated chair, heating pad or electrically heated clothing.
This is especially interesting when people in the same room have different warmth needs.
What does research say?
Research on personal comfort systems shows that personal climate systems can improve thermal comfort under suitable conditions.
Electrically heated clothing has also been studied separately. In one study at indoor temperatures of 15 and 18 °C, electrically heated clothing improved participants' thermal sensation.
This should not be translated directly into a claim about a KingsPower product or a fixed amount of energy savings. It mainly shows why the principle is interesting: local electrical heating brings warmth close to the body.
Can the thermostat be set lower?
That depends entirely on the situation.
If personal heating keeps you comfortable at a lower room temperature, it may be possible to use less space heating. Whether this actually saves energy and money depends on factors such as the type of home, insulation, heating system, outdoor temperature, number of people, thermostat setting and how long the heated clothing is used.
That is why the statement “heated clothing always saves energy” is too strong. A better conclusion is that personal heating can make it possible to use heat more selectively.
One person or five people makes a difference
If one person is working from home in a relatively large house, keeping several rooms warm for one user may feel inefficient.
Personal heating can then be an additional option, for example by wearing a heated vest or hoodie and heating only the rooms that are actually in use.
In a household where everyone is at home, the calculation is naturally different.
Also relevant at work
The same principle may be useful in warehouses, workshops, reception areas and other locations where keeping an entire space evenly warm is difficult or impractical.
This does not replace requirements for a safe working environment. Local heat can, however, contribute to individual employee comfort.
Targeted warmth as a practical choice
The value of heated clothing is not the promise that central heating never has to be used again.
The value is control. You carry the warmth with you, choose a setting and adjust the amount of additional heat as your environment or activity changes.
